Kent Environment Business of the Year 2006 Carbon8 Systems Ltd |
Climate Change Technology a Winner A company just 10 months old, which has already developed potentially world- changing technology, has marked 20 years of the Environment Awards for Kent Business by clinching the title ‘Kent Environment Business of the Year 2006’. |
Carbon8 Systems Ltd, a spin-out from the University of Greenwich at Medway, developed new technology to treat and convert industrial wastes into either construction material or less hazardous waste for cheaper disposal, which secured it the accolade of being the county’s top environmental achiever of 2006.
It was awarded the title ‘Kent Environment Business of the Year’ by Roger Manning, Kent County Council Lead Member for Environment, at a gala ceremony at East Malling Conference Centre.
The company, based at Chatham Maritime, won unanimous praise from the judging panel for its innovative Accelerated Carbonation Technology used to treat waste such as incinerator ash by reacting it with carbon dioxide to produce aggregate for use in concrete blocks, potentially drastically reducing the impact of climate change through its consumption of large amounts of Carbon Dioxide, a key ‘greenhouse’ gas.
Cllr Manning said: “Over the past 20 years the Environment Awards for Kent Business have attracted high calibre entries from across Kent.
“This year is no exception and whereas Carbon8 are worthy overall winners I congratulate all the top ten finalists. Carbon8’s scientific innovation will reach far beyond the county’s boundaries.
“Kent is leading the field in promoting sustainable business and environmental technology and these awards are a celebration of what local schools and businesses are doing to keep us at the forefront of sustainable environmental technology.”
Dr Paula Carey, Commercial Director of Carbon8 Systems Ltd, added: “We are very excited to have won, particularly as the company was only formed in February.
“Substantial research has taken place within the University and we have now reached a point where the research data set and climate for innovative solutions to the control of greenhouse gases mean that it is an ideal time to commercialise the technology. As a new spin-out company from the University of Greenwich, we are delighted to have the recognition of the Kent business community.”
